Coventry Carol

Coventry Carol Lyrics and Music

The rousing words and lyrics of this yuletide hymn begin with "Lullay, Thou little tiny Child" as the first words of this famous Christmas Carol. The name of the author of the lyrics and words of this old Christmas Carol, 'Coventry Carol', is unknown but it was traditionally sung during the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors guild in Coventry, England. The carol was included in a series of late medieval mystery plays that covered the story of the Nativity from the Annunciation to the Massacre of the Innocents. The lyrics of this Medieval Christmas carol reflects Herodís slaughter of the innocents as told in the Bible in Matthew 2:16.

Coventry Carol Lyrics

Lullay, Thou little tiny Child,
By, by, lully, lullay.
Lullay, Thou little tiny Child.
By, by, lully, lullay.

O sisters, too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day;
This poor Youngling for whom we sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

Herod the King, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day;
His men of might, in his own sight,
All children young, to slay.

Then woe is me, poor Child, for Thee,
And ever mourn and say;
For Thy parting, nor say nor sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.
