Steal Away Song Meaning and History
The history of the "Steal Away"
song lyrics date back to the Slave Plantations
between the 1600's to 1800's. Meaning: The song was sung by slaves
at religious gatherings as a reference to stealing
away to freedom. The song was used as a signal by a
religious leader Nat Turner (October 2, 1800 -
November 11, 1831) to mount a slave revolt, called
the Southampton Insurrection, August 21, 1831. Nat
Turner's revolt was quashed within 48 hours but his
stance against slavery led to groups that would
become known as the "Underground Railroad", the code
name for a secret organization who helped slaves
escape from slavery in the South. We have placed
"Steal Away" in the category of African American Spirituals, aka Negro Spirituals and Slave Songs.
